Third Win of Season in Asia
Tim was again in Malaysia over the UK Bank Holiday weekend and took his third win in three races of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia series in his GruppeM racing Porsche 997. As at the Malaysian GP meeting last month two races in the series were held on May 6th and although Tim led the second race for 15 laps out of the 20 he was given a “drive through” penalty and so finished 4th.
In the first race (round 3 of the series) Tim led off the line from pole position and was able to control the race from the front with former Asian and Australian F3 champion Christian Jones second and Thailand’s Vutthikorn Inthraphuvasak made a welcome return to the podium in 3rd place at the end, Nigel Albon was 4th and Japanese F3 ace Keita Sawa 5th.
For the second race Tim was again on pole and got away first to lead Jones for the second time in the weekend. Jones was able to follow closely but never in a position to challenge for the lead however his team made a protest that Tim had jumped the start. Whilst this was not upheld by the start line marshals report and video evidence inconclusive as it does not show both cars and lights the stewards finally accepted the protest and Tim was given a drive through penalty which he took from a leading position on lap 15.
Unfortunately Jones damaged his radiator on the same lap and lost water causing his retirement from the race and so the win was taken by Sawa from Inthraphuvasak and Albon with Tim finishing 4th with fastest lap
These results leave Tim and GruppeM leading the championship by 8 points from Sawa with Inthraphuvasak a further 6 points behind in 3rd, then Albon 4th and Jones 5th. The next meeting is in Indonesia on July 22/23.
